Reality Tv brings spice and drama in our everyday television. When viewers are bored from the saas-bahu drama of daily soaps, reality TV brings joy to several viewers who like to watch the realistic drama. In this article, we have discussed top Reality Shows in India.

 

Top 10 Reality TV Shows in India

1. Bigg Boss

Bigg Boss is an Indian television reality TV show produced by Endemolshine India. The show has seven versions in seven languages in India. The Hindi version of Bigg Boss debuted in 2006. Now the show has expanded to Kannada, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Malayalam. 

In the show, contestants are isolated from the outside world and live in a house together. The elimination of the contestants is based on voting, tasks, and the last one remaining in the house wins a cash prize. The housemates are monitored continuously during their stay in the show. 

The contestants are assigned tasks daily by the authority figure Bigg Boss; they have to participate in household tasks such as cleaning, washing clothes, cooking, etc. There is a luxury budget given to the house for items other than necessities; its amount depends on the task performed. Every week an elimination voting round is organized in which the housemates vote privately in the confession room. The audience is also allowed to vote to save or evict a contestant from the house. 

Bigg Boss is based on the show Big Brother which gained immense popularity when Shilpa Shetty won it. The show aired on Sony Entertainment for the first season. Arshad Warsi was the host for season 1 and Shilpa Shetty for season 2. After that, Amitabh Bachchan hosted the show for the third season. Salman Khan has been the show host since season 4. Atul Kapoor is the voice of Bigg Boss since season one. The winning prize was INR 1 crore in the first four seasons; from the fifth season, it has been reduced to INR 50 Lakh.

The house for Bigg Boss has changed several locations over the years, the first house was in Lonavala Mumbai, from the fifth season a new home in Pune Karjat was built. The Lonavala house was reused from the sixth season. Rahu

Rahul Roy, Ashutosh Kaushik, Vindu Dara Singh, Shweta Tiwari, Juhi Parmar, Urvashi Dholakia, Gauhar Khan, Gautam Gulati, Prince Narula, Manveer Gurjar, Shilpa Shinde and Dipika Kakar have been the winners of the Bigg Boss.

The show has different versions all over India, Bigg Boss Kannada aired in 2013 and since then has completed six seasons. The Bengali Big Boss also aired in 2013 and has since only produced two seasons. Bigg Boss Tamil and Telugu aired in 2017, Marathi and Malayalam aired in 2018. 

 

2. KBC

Kaun Banega Crorepati, also known as KBC is an Indian Quiz Show based on British Show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? The show debuted on television in 2001 with Amitabh Bachchan as its host. This was also Amitabh Bachchan’s television debut. Season one aired from 2000 to 2001, and it has a winning prize of INR 1 crore. 

For season two, Amitabh Bachchan was again roped in as the host, but he fell ill during the show due to which Star Plus dropped the show abruptly. Shahrukh Khan hosted the third season, which had a winning prize of INR 2 crore. The rating of the show went down due to the change of the host. For season 4, Amitabh Bachchan made a comeback as KBC’s host. It aired on Sony Entertainment television instead of Star Plus. The winning prize was reduced to INR 1 crore with a unique question to earn INR 5 crore. 

The significant change in season five was ‘single padao’ for every contestant. The tagline of the season five was Koi Bhi Insaan Chota Nahi Hota. It also included the Ghar baithe jeeto jackpot segment in the show. Season six aired in 2012 with the tagline ‘Sirf Gyan hi aapko aapka haq dilayega,’ this season gave socially excluded people another chance. 

For season seven, prize money was increased to INR 7 crore and aired in 2013 with tagline ‘Seekhna Bandh toh Jeetna Bandh.’ The Power Paplu feature was added in this season, which allowed the contestant to reuse a lifeline used previously. The phone a friend time was extended to 45 seconds. The season 8 was aired in 2014 and was shot in Surat, the first time outside Mumbai. The winning prize continued to be seven crores. The Season 9 returned in 2017 with the tagline, ‘jawaab dene ka Waqt aa Gaya hai.’ The show changed its format to 16 questions. The show received the highest TRP that year. Season 10 and season 11 aired in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Since season 8, nobody has won the grand prize of INR 7 crore. 

 

3. Indian Idol

Indian Idol is a singing reality TV show based on British show Pop Idol. Pop Idol was put on hiatus but had several versions all around the world, such as American Idol, Canadian Idol, Arab Idol, etc. Indian Idol debuted in India in 2004 on Sony Entertainment Television. There have been 11 Indian Idol seasons since 2004, with two of them being Indian Idol junior. Anu Malik, Sunidhi Chauhan, Salim Merchant, Asha Bhosle, Farah Khan, Sonu Nigam, Alisha Chinai, Udit Narayan, Javed Akhtar, Sonali Bendre, Kailash Kher, Sonakshi Sinha, Shalmali Kholgade, Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani, Shreya Ghoshal, Neha Kakkar, Javed Ali, and Himesh Reshammiya have served as judges in various seasons of Indian Idol over the years.

 

4. Splitsvilla

MTV Splitsvilla is a dating reality TV show aired on MTV India. The show debuted in 2008 and was hosted by Nikhil Chinapa; Sunny Leone and Rannvijay Singh now host the show. The show selects boys and girls as contestants for the show. The participants of the show have to live in a villa isolated from the world. The show is a journey to find true love, boys and girls go through difficult tasks, jealousy fights to find their true love in other contestants. There are King and Queen who have elimination power; in season nine, there were only queens and no king, in season 10 and 11, ideal matches had elimination power. Perfect matches are calculated by the oracle, which checks the compatibility of the couple. The ideal matches sometimes change when the couples dynamic changes during the show.

 

5. Nach Baliye

Nach Baliye is a dance reality TV show which has celebrity couples as contestants. The pair have to perform every week on different themes. They are given points on their performance. The score, along with the popularity of the couple decides whether they will be eliminated or stay in the running of Nach Baliye. The show aired on Star Plus and had aired nine seasons since its debut. Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar, Hussain and Tina Kuwajerwala, Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Sheikh, Shaleen Bhanot, and Dalljiet Kaur, Jay Bhanushali and Mahi Vij, Rithvik Dhanjani and Asha Negi, Himmanshoo A. Malhotra and Amruta Khanvilkar, Vivek Dahiya and Divyanka Tripathi are winners of Nach Baliye. Prince Narula and Yuvika Chaudhary stood winners of Nach Baliye season 9.

 

6. India’s got Talent

India’s Got Talent is a reality TV show aired on Colors TV. It is an extension of the Got Talent franchise. India’s Got Talent aired first in 2009. The show follows the Got Talent format. Three judges select contestants for further rounds. There is an audition round, quarter-finals, semifinals, and finale. The judges decide the fate of the contestant till quarter-finals, in the finals and semifinals, viewer voting decides the elimination of contestants. The auditions of India’s Got Talent is held in various cities across India. The participants selected in these auditions are sent for judges audition. The judge’s audition is recorded and aired. The judges are given buzzers that can be pressed if they do not want the act to go on. The selected contestants compete for a place in the semifinals. The golden buzzer sends a participant directly in the next round no matter what the votes are. Kiran Kher, Karan Johar, and Malaika Arora are acting judges of India’s Got Talent.

 

7. Dance India Dance

Dance India Dance acronym DIC is a dance reality TV show aired on Zee TV. It premiered in 2009. Dancers from around India are auditioned to become contestants on the show. The top 18 dancers from auditions are selected for the main competition. The dancers are versatile, and the show does not support a single dance form. Each week the contestants perform and judged by judges and Grand Master. The votes of viewers are also taken into account for elimination. The show has three judges and a Grand Master. Mithun Chakraborty has been the grandmaster since season 1. For the first three seasons, Master Remo D’ Souza, Master Terence Lewis, and Master Geeta Kapoor were judges. Since then judges have frequently changed. When a contestant performs exceptionally he is given Grand Salute from Grand Master. The winner of the show receives the title of India’s best dancer.

 

8. Roadies

Roadies is an adventure reality TV show aired on MTV India. It premiered in 2003. Auditions for roadies are held all over India, and selected contestants go through rigorous tasks to win the title of MTV roadies. There is courage, vigor, team spirit required in youth to become a Roadie. The winner earns a cash prize and popularity. Raghu Ram and Rajiv Lakshman are the creators of the show but left it in 2014. They wanted to pass on the legacy to the new generation. The show is one of the longest-running shows in India. The contestants have to perform tasks and earn immunity from the vote out. A vote ceremony is held where contestants write the name of the person they want to eliminate on paper. The contestant with the highest vote is eliminated. Sometimes there are advantages tasks that give the voting power to a single person.

 

9. Super Dancer

Super Dancer is a kid dancing show aired on Sony Entertainment Television. The show holds all India Auditions to search for dancing prodigies for the competition. The selected contestants are paired with a choreographer and have to perform weekly on several themes. They are judged by judges and also receive votes from viewers. The elimination depends on these two factors. The show is judged by Anurag Basu, Shilpa Shetty, and Geeta Kapoor.

 

10. The voice

The Voice is a singing reality TV show; it is adapted from the Dutch version of The Voice created by John De Mol. The voice debuted in India in 2015 and has since produced three seasons. The auditions of the show are held all over India. The blind audition stage has judges turned their back on the contestant, and they press the buzzer to show interest in the participant. Pawandeep Rajan, Farhan Sabir, and Sumit Saini are winners of the three seasons of The Voice.
