Porn Hub India ban – Pirnhub
In late 2018, the government’s Department of Telecom ordered internet service providers to ban 827 websites that hosted pornographic content in India. The government decided to take such strict action when during an investigation of a rape case, it was found that the accused who committed the crime had seen a porn video on their mobile phones before doing the crime.
It was found that about 91% of the users in India access the website using their phones, making India one of the biggest providers of mobile traffic for the site. India was among the top 5 countries providing internet traffic to PornHub, but the ban caused the company to fall 12 places among the top countries. This has affected the traffic on the website; however, people found other ways to gain access to the site.
Note: In the list of top 300 popular internet sites, there are eleven pornography sites on that list.
Impact on PornHub and alternate ways
This ban on porn by the government has caused a tremendous impact on the traffic received by PornHub as well as in the whole industry. A considerable decline was noticed in the number of users on the platform after the ban, but people were determined to gain access to the sites.
People took matters in their own hands as they started using Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to gain access to the website, and since October 2018, the country witnessed a 405% increase in the downloads for such apps. PornHub also created a mirror website for people, whereas other providers bought new domains to make their services available in the country.
