About Sakshi Malik

Sakshi Malik is an Indian freestyle wrestler, the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal in the Olympics. Sakshi Malik is 27 years old and was born on 3 September 1992 in Mokhra village of Haryana, to a health clinic supervisor and a Delhi Transportation Corporation bus conductor. Sakshi Malik’s grandfather Badlu Ram was a wrestler, and he was an inspiration for her. She started training at the age of 12 under a coach Ishwar Dahiya, in an akhara in Rohtak.

The Indian Railways has employed Sakshi Malik in the commercial department. She works in the Delhi division of the Northern Railway Zone. Malik is also a part of the private organization JSW Sports Excellence program. After she won the bronze medal in the Rio Olympics, she was promoted to a gazetted officer rank from a senior clerk. She completed her education from Vaish Public School Rohtak. She has a Master’s degree in Physical Education from Maharshi Dayanand University. She also acts as the university’s wrestling director.

Sakshi Malik won several medals during her teenage in local wrestling competitions. At Junior World Championship, she earned a bronze medal in 2010. In 2014 she received a Gold medal at the Dave Schultz International Wrestling Tournament. She won a silver medal in the 2014 Commonwealth Games; this victory is known to be closest to her heart. She earned a bronze medal in the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship in 2015.

Sakshi Malik is married to Indian wrestler Satyawart Kadian. They got married in 2017; both are from a wrestling background. Sushil Kumar, the two-time Olympic medalist, was along with other Olympic medalists such as P.V. Sindhu, who were guests at their wedding.

Rio Olympics

In 2016 Sakshi Malik won against Kyrgyzstan’s Aisuluu Tynybekova in 58 kg freestyle wrestling. She has a last-minute Bollywood style victory and won by 8-5. Kyrgyzstan’s wrestler was leading by 5 points. In the second half, they Sakshi managed two, two-pointers, and balanced the score at 4-5. After this, the Indian girl did not stop scoring and won the match by 8-5.

Awards and Prizes

Sakshi Malik was awarded the Padma Shri in 2017; it is the fourth-highest award by the Indian Government. In 2016 she was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award after the Rio Olympics, which is the highest sports honor of India. She has received several cash prizes from the Indian Olympic Association, Indian Government, Government of Haryana, Delhi, and several other states and private organizations such as JSW Group. The cash prize is estimated to be 5.7 crores.
