NHAI (National Highway Authority of India) decided to waive off the 100 Rs FASTag cost between 15th and 29th February 2020 as reported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
What is FASTag?
FASTag is an electronically readable tag that is attached to Vehicle’s Windscreen to enable automated toll deductions from a linked bank account without any manual intervention. Currently, FASTags are made mandate and are active at toll booths across 527 national highways.
Why has the Government made FASTag free for users?
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, waived off the FASTag fee of INR 100 fro 15 days. The Government has taken the step to promote the electronic toll collection and smooth flow of the system after making FASTag mandate since last year.
Earlier, NHAI had announced free FASTags from November 22 to December 15, 2019, to encourage people to use these.
The Government also relaxed the conditions regarding the declaration of FASTag Fee lanes for the next 30 days from January 15, 2020, at identified 65 high cash transaction fee plazas.
Initiatives being taken by the Government for the regulation of FASTags
The Ministry has asked NHAI to ensure the least possible number of declared FASRag lane of Fee plaza to be converted into Hybrid lanes temporarily and further at least 75% lanes of these 65 high cash transaction fee plazas to remain declared as operational as ‘FASTag lane of Fee plaza’ to incentivize the vehicles carrying FASTag.
How can you get your Free FASTag?
FASTags can be bought from all the national highway fee plazas, regional transport offices, conventional service centers, and petrol pumps.
Ministry has clarified that users can get their Free FASTags; however, the fee security deposit and minimum balance, which is applicable for the FASTag wallet needs to be maintained.
