Lilly Singh, widely acclaimed as the 'Superwoman' was born on September 26 in a Punjabi family based in Canada. Her earnings in the year 2017 were almost equal to 10.5 million U.S dollars because of which she got placed in the 10th rank on the Forbes list of highest-paid YouTube stars globally.

Lilly Singh? Superwoman? Is she a stunt choreographer or an enthusiastic celebrity? 

Lilly Singh, widely acclaimed as the ‘Superwoman’ was born on September 26, 1988. She is a Canadian personality and is multi-talented as she is a television host, comedian, YouTuber, and an actress. Her earnings in the year 2017 were almost equal to 10.5 million U.S dollars because of which she got placed in the 10th rank on the Forbes list of highest-paid YouTube stars globally. She is the only celebrity to feature in the annual YouTube Rewind video every year since 2014. 

In the entertainment category, she earned first place in the Forbes Top Influencers list for the year 2017. She was also one of the 40 most influential people in the field of comedy in 2019. She has won numerous awards and accolades. Some of them include a People’s Choice Award, Two Teen Choices Awards, four Streamy Awards and has also received an MTV Fandom Award.

Her first feature film was released in the year 2016, and was titled as ‘A Trip to Unicorn Island.’ She is also an eminent author, and her first book, How to Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life got released in March 2017. The book was a phenomenal success and in a short period became the No. 1 New York Times best-seller.

In March 2019, Lilly Singh became the first woman to host a late-night show with an American broadcast network since Cynthia Garett. Singh attained this phenomenal feat when she hosted the night talk show ‘A Little Late with Lilly Singh’ for the American Broadcast Network NBC. 

She also became the first woman among the hosts of the current generation to feature on a late-night show and also the first one to be identified as bisexual.

Do you guys know that Lilly Singh is an Indian? Yes, she is. Though she was born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, her parents are initially from HoshiarpurPunjab, India. She got raised as a Sikh, but as she was born in Canada, she got bestowed with the Canadian Nationality.

Singh always states that as a child she was more of a tomboy. She did her schooling from the Mary Shadd Public School and graduated from the Lester B.Pearson Collegiate Institute at Toronto in 2006. She participated in many youth programs of Girl Guides Canada and was also an eminent member of them. 

She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology, and she graduated with the degree from the York University at Toronto in 2010. She started developing a secure connection with her Punjabi heritage with her frequent visits to India. 

Singh just like other people of her age was struggling with depression and hence started uploading videos on YouTube to deal with her feelings. In December 2015, she moved out to Los Angeles from Ontario to further her career. She stated herself as bisexual to the public through a social media platform in February 2019.

Singh started a YouTube Channel for uploading her videos under the name ‘Superwoman’ in October 2010. The reason she named it as Superwoman is that she was prompted by a childhood idea which made her believe that anything is possible for her. 

She portrays the Punjabi Culture frequently in her videos which also contains satirical content on the everyday life of people and even on their complaints regarding society.

The most popular video of Singh on YouTube is How Girls Get Ready and in almost all her popular series on the platform features her fictional parents, Manjeet and Paramjeet. Both the characters are played by Singh herself. 

Singh reacts to the most trending and controversial videos utilizing the character of her parents to give it comic relief. She frequently collaborates with many eminent celebrities on her videos. 

The long list of eminent celebrities who have featured on her video includes Selena Gomez, Seth Rogen, Dwayne Johnson, James Franco, Noah Schnapp, Kunal Nayyar, Shay Mitchell, Priyanka Chopra, Nargis Fakhri, Madhuri Dixit, Amber Rose, Caleb McLaughlin, Steve Aoki, Hasan Minhaj, and Phil McGraw. Currently, her channel is close to reaching 15 million subscribers and has garnered over 3.5 billion views. 


Her Career as Vlog Channel Artist:

Singh started her second channel on Youtube, by the name ‘Superwoman Vlogs.’ In this channel, she began filming her day-to-day activities which also included the behind the scenes footages of her videos. Until August 2014, she used it as a second channel to upload her videos but later on started to upload daily vlogs in it every day since then. 


Her career as a Music Artist:

She began her career as a music artist in August 2013, when she featured with Jassi Sidhu in his Punjabi song Hipshaker. She also provided rapping for the song Mauj Ki Malharein, which featured in the Bollywood drama film Gulaab Gang in August 2014. 

She released a song by the name #LEH in collaboration with her friend Kanwer Singh who himself is a rapper and an author. Kanwer Singh goes by the pseudonym ‘Humble the Poet,’ and this song got released on July 2014.

Another music video titled ‘The Clean Up Anthem’ was recorded and released by her in February 2015. For this video, she collaborated with the famous Canadian artist Sickick. She again worked with her friend Kanwer Singh and recorded another video titled #IVIVI. In this music video, she described her hometown, Toronto.

She released a visual music piece on YouTube channel titled ‘Voices,’ which included around five songs. This music piece got published on August 8, 2016, and all the songs portrayed the voices which were playing in her head from a long time. The visual music piece was of the genre of Pop/Modern Hip Hop. 

The songs which got included in the music piece showed various signs of human beings such as fear of loneliness, lust, boasting, positive views promoting global peace and goofiness. Singh also appeared in the music video of Maroon 5’s ‘Girls Like You’ in 2018, which also featured Cardi B. 


Her career as an Actor in Feature Films:

During the initial days of her career, she appeared as a background dancer in several movies such as Speedy Singhs and Thank You. She also featured in a small yet brief role in the Indo-Canadian production Dr.Cabbie which got released in 2014. 

She provided the voiceover for miniature unicorns Bubbles and Misty in the animated movie Ice Age: Collision Course in the year 2016. In the same year, she also featured in a cameo role for the movie Bad Moms.

She also made a staggering appearance in the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark portraying herself. She had several of her web series with the I Love Makeup channel on YouTube, which included The Tube’s Hautest, Giving Back Glam, and Lana Steele: Makeup Spy. She also got cast in HBO’s film adaptation of Fahrenheit 451 as a radio jockey. 


The Philanthropic Activities of Lilly Singh:

Singh was announced as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, to advocate for children’s rights in 2017. She has also led a social campaign by the name ‘GirlLove,’ whose sole purpose was to promote girls in ending their girl-to-girl hate.

This social campaign has also helped thousands of girls to gain education all around the world.

She traveled to South Africa in July 2018, as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador to meet the students of elementary schools who were against anti-social elements such as bullying and classroom violence. 


The Awards and Accolades of Lilly Singh: 

Her YouTube channel got placed at number 39 on New Media Rockstars list of Top 100 channels in YouTube. She was included in the People’s Magazine annual list of ‘Ones to Watch’ in September 2015. She also received her first MTV Fandom Award and was nominated for two Teen Choice Awards. Later, during the same year, she also won her first Streamy Award. 

She got placed at the 8th rank on the Forbes list of World’s Top-Earning YouTube Stars of 2015. She was also one of the celebrities to feature in the Fast Company Magazine’s list of 100 Most Creative People in Business. She was also recognized by the Variety magazine as one of their 10 Comics to Watch for in 2016. 

She was also honored at the Just For Laughs Film Festival in Montreal. In the same year, she was also awarded two Teen Choice Awards out of her three nominations. In the year 2017, she was awarded the People’s Choice Award under the category for Favorite YouTube Star. 

She also won her fourth Streamy Award in the same year. In November 2017, she was chosen as the brand ambassador for Pantene shampoo and also started partnering with Calvin Klein.


Seeing all her achievements, she is apt for being called as the ‘Superwoman’ right?

Yes, she is. At a tender age, Lilly Singh has accomplished many things in life, which has been a dream still for many. And all of these achievements were possible only because of her sheer dedication and hard work. Today, she is one of the top YouTube stars and celebrity all over the world.
