Introduction

UTR number means (Unique Taxpayer Reference Number), UTR number is a ten-digit code that is issued by HMRC (HM Revenue and Customs). UTR number is used to identify individual Taxpayers Within the system. UTR number is issued to individuals, companies, partnerships, trusts, and organizations.

 

What is UTR number, and why do we need it?

UTR number( unique taxpayer reference number) is generated to identify and monitor financial transactions. UTR number is used to track funds if they get stuck or get a reference of a transaction earlier.

UTR number is generated when transferring money between two bank accounts. The user can opt for either option for transferring funds between NEFT and RTGS, UTR number is generated both in RTGS and NEFT transactions.

 

How to get UTR Number

UTR number is issued on registering for Self Assessment, which takes time up to seven to eight weeks to receive the information needed to activate the UTR number through HMRC online account.

UTR number is generated automatically by HMRC, 

The length of the UTR number is 22 characters long for RTGS and 16 characters for NEFT, the format of UTR number for RTGS transaction is “XXXXRCYYYYMMDD########.”

  • Here XXXX is IFSC code ( first four characters) – Bank code of sender.
  • R represents here RTGS system.
  • C is the channel of transaction.
  • YYYYMMDD here is the representation of the Year, Month, and date of the transaction.
  • ######## is the sequence number of code.

User can access the UTR account in HMRC online account and is also printed in the letter from HMRC about self Assessment.

 

Information needed to register for a UTR Number

The user can register as Self-employed and get the UTR number.

Following are the required information to register for a UTR number:

  1. User Name.
  2. User Address.
  3. Date of Birth.
  4. E-mail Address
  5. Business Address 
  6. Contact telephone number.
  7. National Insurance number.
  8. Nature of Business.

 

What are NEFT and RTGS?

NEFT is a National Electronic Funds transfer where the transactions are processed in batches and are not immediate. Currently, NEFT operates in half-hourly batches from 8 am to 7 pm each weekday and on working Saturdays. NEFT UTR Number is generated by banks for a successful transaction.  

RTGS stands for Real-Time Gross Settlement, and under RTGS, the fund transfers are immediately processed. The funds transferred using RTGS are deposited within two hours in the beneficiary account. RTGS is the fastest way of inter-bank fund transfer.

 

How to apply for a new UTR Number?

If by mistake, you lost your UTR number, the user can apply to retrieve it by calling on HMRC’s new Self Assessment helpline on 0300 200 3310, National Insurance Number is required for retrieval of UTR number.

If you are the proprietor of a limited company, you can apply to receive the company’s UTR number online, where you’ll need the company registration number and registered company name to complete the form, once done with the regulatory, HMRC will post the retrieved number to the registered company address.
